How do I use the search in the database most effectively? (Boolean search)

The Boolean search allows you to combine keywords using the logical operators AND, OR, and NOT, or by using carefully placed punctuation marks to limit, expand, or define your search in the Bestjobs CV database.

This method allows for precise filtering or diversification of skills, types of experience, or desired qualities from potential candidates, or the exclusion of specific criteria altogether.

Here are the functions you can use to refine your search in the Bestjobs CV database:

  • NOT (exclusion): Type the word NOT (in uppercase) before a keyword to exclude it from the search results.

For example, if you need candidates with programming experience but without managerial skills, use the search: programmer NOT manager.

  • AND (inclusion): Type the word AND (in uppercase) between the keywords to find results that include all the mentioned keywords.

For example, if you need an Android developer, for the best results, the Boolean search string should be 'developer AND android'. This search will produce results that include both keywords.

Other examples: designer AND UX, sales AND call center, accountant AND finance, etc.

Attention! The AND function will narrow down your search.

  • OR (inclusion): Type the word OR (in uppercase) between the entered keywords to get results that include one or more of the keywords. This way, you expand your search results.

For example, if you need candidates with experience in sales, marketing, or advertising, you would use the following string: 'sales OR marketing OR advertising'. We will provide you with CVs that contain any of the three keywords.

Other examples: Android OR mobile, public relations OR communication, bank OR finance OR financial, coordinator OR team leader, etc.

This is an effective method to reach candidates who use different words to express the same thing.

  • Quotation Marks / Exact Phrase Searches: To find an exact phrase, enclose it in quotation marks. This tells us that you want to find the exact words within the quotation marks in the candidate's CV, in the specified order.

Example: "product manager," "customer service," "UX designer," "PHP developer," etc.

Often, with a regular search and leaving a space between "service" and "customer," the resulting CVs will contain both words, "customer" and "service," but not necessarily together. You need to enter "customer service" to get more relevant results.

You can also use quotation marks if you want to find individuals with a job title consisting of multiple words.

Example: full stack developer.

Tip! Be careful not to use the Romanian keyboard when using quotation marks, as they may not be recognized in Boolean search.

  • Parentheses () / Searches using parentheses: Use parentheses to perform complex searches, where you can set priorities and combine keywords.

Example: Let's say you want to hire a software developer. If you only search for "web developer," you might miss out on many good CVs that mention a different title, such as "software developer" or "web programmer." You can combine the AND and OR commands, as well as parentheses, to search for multiple terms: (Web OR software) AND (developer OR programmer).

Example 2: (developer OR designer) AND Java indicates that knowledge of Java is a requirement for both developers and designers. But in a search like 'designer OR (developer AND Java)', knowledge of Java is only important for the developers you are looking for, not for the designers.

Other examples: (manager OR coordinator) project, marketing AND (sales OR vanzari).

This way, you ensure that you reach all candidates with marketing experience and all candidates who have included the terms "sales" or "vanzari" in their CVs. The advantage is that you get both candidates who prefer to use the term in English and those who use the Romanian term.

Tip! If you find that a search is filtering too many CVs, remove a function until you get the desired number of relevant CVs.

Important!

  • When using the operators AND, OR, NOT, make sure to write them in uppercase.
  • The Bestjobs search only accepts standard straight quotation marks ("").
  • If your search has two or more terms/keywords, you will automatically see results that include all the terms. Even if you don't use the word AND, it is the default search.
  • For a less restrictive search, use the word OR.
